Lucky Chip New Restaurant, Burger & Wine – Dalston

It seems 2016 is already proving to be quite the year for the most scrumptious restaurant openings…

East London’s favourite burger joint, “Lucky Chip” has finally hit the brakes on their nomadic existence (trading out of snazzy pop-up food trucks) by “settling down” and finally unveiling a new and exciting permanent base on Ridley Road in Dalston entitled “Burger & Wine”.

Long before the news initially erupted on the scene that Lucky Chip founder Ben Denner was to finally have a steadfast stomping ground in January 2016, the Lucky Chip franchise had already garnered major buzz via various successful residencies around Hackney at locations such as the Seabright Arms, Birthdays and Netil Market.

Although Lucky Chip may not be the freshest of restaurant openings this winter, having been founded in 2011, I’m sure the news still came with great elation to their bevvy of supporters who no longer have to traipse around various locations to sample their favourite patty.

Not only is Denner proficient in making our mouth salivate with anticipation by merely reading the descriptions of his star studded cast of burgers (they have a “Kevin Bacon”, “Woody Harrelson” and “El Chappo” Burger!) but is also a champion in rousing the attention from real-deal Hollywood actors as well.

On January 6th, Denner premiered the new “Mark Wahlberg” burger on his Facebook page and within hours an unimpressed Wahlberg got a whiff that Lucky Chip had used his namesake without his permission. At 3am the next morning, Denner was sent a with a cease and desist letter via email from Wahlbergs lawyers asking to remove the burger in its entirety from the menu, OR ELSE!

Instead of doing as they asked, Denner simply renamed the burger “The Dirk Diggler” (in honour of Wahlberg’s character in Boogie Nights) and took advantage of the “all-press-is-good-press” buzz. Before he knew it, the story went viral and was picked up by most news stations. Denner even received a  personal invitation by an ITV journalist to chat about his experience with his “Hollywood drama”.

Well, thank you Mr Wahlberg!

Apart from brushing shoulders with American superstars (he has also collaborated with Taylor Swift on tour) Denner also has a keen eye for keeping his menu interesting and on trend for the masses of burger obsessed foodies. This includes the time when in 2013 at the Sebright Arms location, Denner constructed a “Breaking Bad” menu. With every burger purchase, Denner proceeded to gift each consumer with Blue Rock Candy; identitcal to fictitious character Walter White’s Crystal Blue Meth. Not to mention his rendition of “Los Pollos Hermanos” fried chicken, chicken with meth hot sauce and fries and Badger’s Yeah Dog chilli dog with mustard and blue crystal meth onions!

I would say, “sign me up!” but sadly, this menu is no more and now I have a severe case of FOMO!

Former “Breaking Bad” Menu.

At the new Burger & Wine restaurant in Dalston however, there is more than enough to be getting your chops smacking. Alongside the classic Cheeseburger, you also have the Royale with Cheese and also the option of upgrading your patty with a 50-day dry-aged Galician beef. Each burger is recommended to pair with a specific wine but ultimately the choice is yours. However if you’re anything like me, a choice of over 100 variations of luxurious wines may make your head spin even before you’ve had a sip.

As for décor think a vintage 1980’s American steakhouse with dark hues, emerald green walls, gaudy chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, retro sound systems and artwork on display.

As for my take on “Lucky Chip, Burger & Wine”?

The best way to describe this growing burger brand is from humble beginnings to becoming one of London’s most illustrious burger connoisseurs. From food truck to restaurateur –  Ben Denner has definitely struck a chord with the people and the people responded “We Want More”! With his first restaurant being just as successful as his other feats and his unintentional media grabbing creative ideas sky rocketing beyond, I can’t help but wonder what else he may have up his sleeve in years to come.

SideNote: Burgers & Wine? Together? Who would’ve thought it…?!
